The Soul City Institute has a number of community-based, on-the-ground initiatives. These include:

Education, training & development

Creating interactive learning materials for use by non-governmental organisations to train master trainers. Using a cascade model, these master trainers then train others to use the educational materials that are distributed throughout South Africa. Millions of South Africans have been reached in this way.

Schools as Nodes of Care

Strengthening schools to provide support for children in need, including children affected by HIV and poverty. School governing bodies are trained with materials specifically produced to aid these efforts. This initiative is linked to a national competition to reward the school that has achieved the most success.

Soul Buddyz Clubs

More than 6,500 Soul Buddyz Clubs across South Africa reach around 130,000 children. The clubs encourage community activism among young children, and are for children by children.

Action for Children

Matching corporate and citizen fundraising for development projects.

Working with communities to implement project that bring about vast improvements. The project is accompanied by a prime time reality TV show, also called Kwanda. It is a pro-social spin on the TV programme "Extreme Makeover". The competition involves the broader South African public, as audience members vote for best community achievement, as well as take part in the community makeovers when participants mobilise them for the show.

Customised media for corporates & government

Working with corporates and government agencies to produce customised media, often relating to HIV/AIDS, relevant to their business needs and work environment.

Centre of Excellence in Health Communication

Partnership with Wits University.
